The Gateway Series knives have the aesthetics of an old school pocket knife. However, lying beneath the surface are the benefits of modern manufacturing.
The integral bolsters and liners are tightly fastened together against the spring using precision made screws. The screws are installed into threaded bores with heads flush to the liner’s surface, all of which is hidden beneath the scales. This method creates an overbuilt condition, virtually eliminating gaps between the liners and spring. The screws will not back out because they are threadlocked and capped by the scales.
The scales are affixed to the liners using industrial strength epoxy. The shield is affixed inside the scale using the same. Adhesives have been used in knifemaking for over 200,000 years, starting when Neanderthals used birch bark tar and plant resins to haft stone flakes onto wooden handles. The use of epoxy allows for consistent application, elimination of gapping due to full surface area bonding, and efficient production over the more traditional method of hammer peened pins.
With several thousand knives in collectors hands by the time of this writing in August 2026, we have seen less than 0.02% epoxy failures. By any measure, an outstanding quality rate. This method of affixing scales, while not traditional, is excellent, strong and durable.
The knives feature nickel silver pins visible on the surface of the scale. While these pins do not serve the construction purpose found in a traditionally made knife, they do indeed serve a purpose. First and foremost, they look great. Conversely, it would look strange if they were not there. Second, they may act as an alignment mechanism for the scale. There are bores drilled in the liners that the pins can slot and glue into. While these alignment pins are not necessary for effective construction, it is a nice touch that helps keep things squared up during scale installation.
Certain variants with domed pins do not align the scales to the liners; in that case the domed pins are aesthetic. Since alignment pins are not required for effective construction, rest assured that your knife featuring aesthetic pins will provide a lifetime of service.
The pivot assembly features hidden screws buried in the bolsters. Its over-cap is blended into the bolster seamlessly, a true marvel of craftsmanship. Using this style of pivot allows for precise tensioning, thereby eliminating blade play or a sluggish action due to overtightening.
The blade pivots on a precision ground threaded barrel while traveling against phosphor bronze washers. The washers prevent scrapes on the blade tang that are otherwise found on knives without washers or relieved liners. The precision ground pivot barrel and blade tang bore are so precisely fitted, that any potential slop is eliminated.
Last and certainly not least are how individual parts are manufactured. While old fashioned knives are made from thinly stamped parts, Gateway Series parts are made on modern manufacturing equipment from thicker sheets of steel. CNC mills, wire EDM machines, surface grinders, bevel grinders and other state of the art equipment is used to produce extremely consistent parts with features not found in stamped parts, such as integral bolsters.
Paired with parts manufactured on modern machines is the old fashioned craft of hand made knifemaking. Knives are hand assembled, then the assembly is ground flush, finished and sharpened by the hands of a craftsman. This skilled hand labor creates the outstanding fit and finish Jack Wolf Knives are known for, evidenced by the seamless transitions where materials and parts come together along with a razor’s edge.
